Most of us are used to hearing how microplastics are literally permeating every aspect of our daily lives. From the water we drink to the clothes we wear, it seems that microplastics and plastic are everywhere.
But one thing you probably didn’t think about is if your favorite gum contains plastic.
Many chewing gum brands contain an ingredient called “gum base” which may contain synthetic materials such as polyethylene and polyvinyl acetate.
The campaigners have argued that consumers deserve to be fully informed about the gum products they consume and are entitled to plastic -free alternatives.
The charity of the city at sea has joined the company without a new plastic gum for a new campaign, which requires the United Kingdom Government to stop the plastic gum.
According to charity, the United Kingdom consumes approximately four billion plastic gum per year, equivalent to four billion plastic straw.
And every day, the United Kingdom chews and rejects 12 tons of gum, which is the equivalent weight of a bus.
Nuud found Keir Carnie said there is about a single hidden plastic of a single plastic with single hidden use “in each piece of regular gum in an interview.
Carnie said the same chemical ingredients at the base of the gum can also be found in shampoo bottles, transport bags and glue.
“Your average gum count is unconsciously chewing on a big plastic stroke,” Carnie told me.
“Microplasty has also been associated with some of the worst diseases of mankind and plastic gum can also be found stuck in many of our sidewalks and finally return to water systems.”
The chief executive of the city at sea Jane Martin said every chewing is like biting in a plastic straw in a statement.
“It breaks down in microplastics that are absorbed, swallowed and absorbed in our bodies. Scientific evidence associate this with overweight, fertility issues and cancer,” Martin added.
“Time the time for the United Kingdom to take the last stance against plastic gum and pollution for people’s health and planet.”
Sian Sutherland, co -founder of a plastic planet, and the Plastic Health Council said if consumers were better informed about thousands of chemicals found in most gum, they would never allow them to touch their lips in an email.
Sutherland’s added consumers should be “indignant” that gum containing plastic is often marketed to children when alternatives are available.
But Tom Raviv, the founder of another brand of gum without plastic, said Milliways as he applauds the new campaign, he believes that infrastructure and raw materials are not currently there to support a complete ban in an interview.
In the past, Raviv said he has recommended that the United Kingdom Government introduce a plastic tax for gum manufacturers using oil -based plastic in their components in the country.
He has also recommended the removal of VAT 20% added to the UK-based plant-based gum
“What we are trying to do all is to emphasize the fact that so many plastic gum ends up in our rivers, oceans and bodies in the form of microplastics and nanoplasty,” he told me.
“We would like to see that the entire sector achieves biodegradability and 100% bobase certificates in accordance with international guidelines, as Milliways has done,” Raviv said.
“This will give consumers and salesmen added comfort of what they are buying and selling. I believe lawmakers should ask for this at a minimum if brands make this request.”
Rachel Watkyn, the founder of the Tyiny Box Company Business Business said even when the chewing gum is properly available, plastic chewing gum lasts endlessly in landfills, in an email.
Watkyn added to make things worse, most gum is packaged in additional plastic layers, adding even more damage to the environment.
“With every piece of chewed chewing gum, we are unconsciously contributing to the spread of plastic pollution – it is a bad state of affairs and one of which is not widely known among the UK population,” he said Watkyn.
